    The Department of Kinesiology and the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University offer a 9-semester hour, online Graduate Certificate Program in Coaching Education. The program consists of three 3-semester hour courses that address legal, administrative, psychological, sociological, and biological issues as they relate to the coaching of amateur athletes. This course sequence may also be used as a concentration in the Master of Arts in Education degree program. After successful completion of all three courses, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded by the Department of Kinesiology.

    Start Date (Program Cycle)
    There are four available courses in the sports coaching and leadership. One course is offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The start times for the fall and spring courses will follow the regular schedule of classes. The summer semester course will follow the schedule for Summer Semester Session One (check the MSU academic calendar for specific dates by year). The four courses are independent of one another and may be taken in any sequence or alone for personal enrichment.

    National Recognition
    Educational coursework from the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University are recognized by the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations and individual state high school athletic associations (e.g., Michigan High School Athletic Association). In Michigan coaches can receive credit from the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) by gaining a certificate: Completion of a three-course sequence will include most of the content in a Coaches Advancement Program (CAP): Level 1 and 2, now offered by the Michigan High School Athletic Association, with one exception: In order for coaches to receive a Level 2 CAP certification, they must also attend the 2.5 hour MHSAA CAP workshop entitled, 'Coaches Make the Difference.' A small fee will be associated to cover instructor costs and materials. To gain advanced CAP certification, coaches must also attend all of the Level 3-6 courses as this content is unique to the MHSAA CAP program.     Who Should Apply
    The goal of these courses is to help coaches and athletic administrators become better prepared to meet the needs and demands of their profession. These courses may be used by graduate students as part of a master’s program and/or for permanent teaching certification for teachers in physical education or related disciplines. Masters of Arts in Education students looking for a concentration in coaching. Coaches of youth, high school, and collegiate athletes. Administrators of athletic programs
